Happy 4th of July! Last night was we went to bed cold and freezing then woke up at 3am to warm air. Apparently a warm front moved in overnight. We got showered. They were single stall showers that had a lock on it like you would see on an port-a-john. They seemed clean though. We left the site and headed for Devils Tower.
We first stopped at the Vore Buffalo Jump site. We debated whether or not to go and decided that we might never be there again so we would stop. It was 5 dollars a person for the “tour”. Notice the quotes around the word tour. That would be because it consisted of a woman walking us through what was posted on the walls, telling us pretty much zero new information and then walking down to the jump site. The jump site was cool. From 1500’s to the 1800’s multiple native groups used this site as a last ditch effort if the hunts had been unsuccessful for the summer. They would run the buffalo over the cliff, killing some and others they would go down and kill themselves afterwards. When they were constructing I-90 they found a sinkhole and when they dug down they found this site which contains remains of those buffalo killed over thousands of years. We were able to view the bones of one’s killed around the time of the American Revolution. While very cool, not worth 10 bucks!
We got to Devil’s Tower at about lunch time. We had a quick bite to eat then headed up to the rock. There were lots of climbers that were fun to watch. We did the mile and a half walk around the tower and took some pictures. Michael climbed up on the rocks but as clumsy as I can be I just watched.
After that we headed towards Montana. Michael saw what he thought was a beautiful lake on our way back down from the tower. It wasn’t until we reached the bottom that we realized it was the flooded river. The amount of flooding out here has been amazing. It makes you wonder how it’s going to affect farmers and the price of food.
Originally we had planned on going with a more rustic campsite for the night but we are in desperate need of laundry. We found one on the campground program on the computer. We called ahead afraid that on the 4th it might be difficult to find one. We got an answering machine that said there was plenty of sites available. We are thinking with people having to work tomorrow many of them probably went home.
The camp ground was nice. The man who owns it was very nice and accommodating. He gave us lots of information about the things we want to see in the next few days. He stopped by to make sure we had enough quarters to do laundry. He went to the office to get us a roll that we exchanged for 10 dollars. When he returned he also brought us two beers and said happy almost anniversary.
We have decided to skip Yellowstone as we have both of us have seen it and it is going to be crazy busy. Besides we missed Laura and Dave anyway! Instead, we are headed to Glacier National Park next. Tomorrow we will be in Montana. I realized I spent my 15th birthday in Montana and am about to spend my 30th there as well. Guess I’ll have to come back for 45!
