Day 19

We woke up in the morning not quite as early as we had hoped.  We said goodbye to Dave and the dogs then headed to Crater Lake.  It took about 4 hours to get there.  We drove into the park and couldn’t believe how cold it got.  It was 47 by the time we got to the rim.  There was snow everywhere.  Michael had been looking forward to seeing it but it still beat his expectations.  We stopped and took pictures a few places then pulled over and had our lunch looking over the lake.  Unfortunately, due to the temperature we had to eat in the car.  After a quick stop at the gift shop we headed back on the rim trail wanting to get to the east side of the rim before turning around and heading south.  Old Man winter had other plans for us yet again.  Only 1/3 of the rim is open and the rest of the road is still blocked by snow.

We left the park and thought we would find a campground somewhere just over the border.  Unfortunately, we didn’t find any campgrounds (other than ones that were part of trailer parks) until after 8pm so we decided to just drive until we got to Reno.   It was a long drive.  Many of the roads were through national forest land and we didn’t see houses for miles at a time.  We drove past a young buck with antlers (Michael guesses it was an 8 point) and were able to snag a few pictures.

We pulled into Reno at 11:30.  We had considered going to Tahoe but we were able to get a room at the Sands for 29 dollars so couldn’t pass it up.  We dropped our stuff then got something to eat.  When we got back to the room and started to get ready for bed we heard a strange noise.  We realized it was the elevators.  There was no way we were going to be able to sleep through that.  They gave us another room that was even better in a different tower.
