We woke up to rain in the morning. Dave made us breakfast and then we headed to the Nursery they own. It had a really cute shop with a huge nursery behind it. If I thought it would have survived the trip I would have bought a few plants. We then decided to head to the Newport Aquarium which was about an hour up the road. It was a little twisty and turny so after about a half hour Dave pulled over to a scenic point to give my stomach in the backseat a rest. Dave used to work for the Parks in the recreation department so he is full of information and fun facts (which you all know I love fun facts!) The place we stopped was called Devil’s Churn. It made you really think about how powerful the Ocean really is.
When we reached Newport we headed down to the bay area to grab some lunch. It was busy down there between the tourist and the boats that were in the harbor. We ended up at Mo’s Restaurant home of the World Famous Clam Chowder. For those of you at home who are wondering….yes when you walk in they say “Welcome to Mo’s.” We know why the clam chowder is world famous. It was delicious. Michael and I also had fish and chips. It was great. After we ate we walked out on the docks and found a sea lion. They lead such a tough life! Haha.
We headed over to the aquarium just as the rain picked up a little bit. When we got there the rain stopped but apparently everyone else had the same idea because the line was out the door. It went quickly though. At lunch we discussed how we all hated snakes. Wouldn’t you know the first exhibit we saw was an anaconda. It was preggers too! They can have like 100 babies at once! YUCK!
There were all sorts of swamp and sea creatures. Michael and Dave really liked watching the anchovies swim. They just kept going in circles over and over again. I loved the jelly fish. They were so peaceful you felt like you were put in a trance just looking at them. We also saw sharks, many kinds of fish, sea lions, otters and birds. I got lots of pictures of puffins which will come in handy this year when I teach the story Night of the Puffins to my 4th graders. We took a ton of pictures of everything.
On the way back we drove up to the top of a overlook where you could see for miles. Then we headed over to the most photographed place on the Oregon coast, the Heceta Head light house. The lighthouse is supposed to be haunted! Unfortunately, it is also in need of renovation so you couldn’t go inside right now. We did go up to it though and had a wonderful view. We also saw the old light keeper’s house which is now a bed and breakfast.
When we got back to the house we had dinner and talked for hours. We even got to see their wedding pictures. We took some photographs of all of us together then it was time for bed. Lisa had to work in the morning so we had to say good bye to her.
